Where Barrier Performance Meets Beauty-Grade Sustainability

Where Barrier Performance Meets Beauty-Grade Sustainability taghleef industries

Beauty and personal care packaging is under growing scrutiny — not just for how it looks on shelf, but for what it’s made of and where it ends up. Consumers are reading ingredient labels and sustainability claims with equal attention. For brands operating in the premium skincare space, packaging must now do double duty: protect a sensitive product and tell a credible environmental story.

Collagen masks sit squarely at this intersection. High in active ingredient value, they demand packaging that performs, yet the formats traditionally used to achieve that performance have been among the hardest to recycle.

Challenge

Collagen actives are unforgiving. Even trace exposure to moisture, oxygen, or light can compromise efficacy — making barrier performance a genuine technical requirement, not a marketing specification. For years, aluminium foil laminations were the default answer. Effective, yes. But built on a multi-material structure that sits outside mainstream recycling streams and clashes with the direction the industry is moving.

The challenge Packstyle brought to the table: find a foil-free path to the same barrier level, in a stand-up pouch format, without sacrificing a millimetre of performance on the converting line.

Solution

Taghleef, in collaboration with Packstyle, developed a PP-based stand-up pouch centred on EXTENDO® XZMU — a high-performance barrier film purpose-built to replace aluminium foil in the most demanding flexible packaging applications.

The final structure — BoPP / EXTENDO® XZMU / CPP — replaces a conventional PET/Alu/PE triplex with a mono-material PP architecture that runs cleanly on existing equipment and enters the recycling stream with none of thecomplexity of its predecessor.

Benefits

  • Ultimate Barrier Properties

EXTENDO® XZMU delivers exceptional resistance to moisture, oxygen, and light — matching the barrier standards previously achievable only with aluminium. Active collagen formulations remain stable and shelf-ready from fill date to consumer use.

  • Recycle-ready Structure

Swapping a PET/Alu/PE triplex for a fully PP-based structure is more than an incremental improvement — it fundamentally changes the end-of-life picture. The resulting pouch is recycle-ready, meeting the material guidelines that retailers and regulators are increasingly requiring.

  • High Performance Packaging

One of the persistent trade-offs with high-barrier films has been machinability. EXTENDO® XZMU breaks that pattern — engineered to process with the same ease and reliability as a standard BoPP film, it slots into existing converting lines without the tension issues, delamination risks, or speed penalties that foil structures typically bring.
