Coffee Packaging Designed to Protect Flavour and the Planet

Coffee is one of the most demanding products to package well. From single-origin roasts to everyday blends, freshnessis everything — and consumers increasingly know it. The window between roasting and the first cup is where packagingeither earns its place or lets the product down.
At the same time, the coffee category is under mounting pressure to clean up its packaging footprint. Multi-layer foil-based bags have long been the industry standard, but their end-of-life story is difficult to defend as brands facetightening sustainability expectations from both retailers and shoppers.
Challenge
Roasted coffee releases CO₂ and absorbs moisture and oxygen simultaneously — a packaging challenge that demandsprecision. The barrier requirements are non-negotiable: any weakness invites staling, flavour loss, and oxidation wellbefore the bag is opened. Achieving this with a recyclable, mono-material structure has historically been considered acompromise too far.
The question on the table: could a fully PP-based solution genuinely replace foil laminations without the flavour andshelf-life trade-offs the industry had come to accept as inevitable?
Solution
Taghleef Industries developed a PP-based coffee packaging structure built around EXTENDO® XZMX — an ultra-highbarrier film engineered specifically for applications where moisture, oxygen, and aroma protection are critical.
The resulting TTR / EXTENDO® XZMX / CPP structure replaces conventional multi-material foil laminates with a 100%PP solution — recycle-ready, line-ready, and built to lock in the rich, authentic flavour of freshly roasted coffee from the moment of sealing to the moment of brewing.
Benefits
- Every Scoop as fresh as the day it was roasted
EXTENDO® XZMX delivers outstanding protection against moisture, oxygen, and aroma migration — the three main enemies of coffee freshness. Flavour integrity is preserved throughout the entire supply chain, from the roastery to the kitchen shelf.
- Recycle-ready Structure
Built entirely from PP, the structure enters the recycling stream cleanly — no foil layers to complicate sorting, no mixed-material penalties. For brands making sustainability commitments they need to stand behind, this is packaging that holds up to scrutiny.
- High Performance Packaging
EXTENDO® XZMX is engineered for excellent machinability, processing on existing converting lines with the ease and predictability of a standard BoPP film. No equipment overhauls, no speed trade-offs, just a high-barrier solution that fits seamlessly into production.
