Taghleef Industries and the challenge for a more Sustainable future

The interview published on Bureau Veritas: Monitoring of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Adriano Zamarian, Quality and Sustainability Systems Manager for Taghleef Industries (Ti) Italy and European Coordinator for other European sites of Ti Group, gave an interview to Bureau Veritas – a world leader in Testing, Inspection and Certification, about Taghleef’s experience in monitoring Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

What prompted you to find concrete tools for monitoring and reducing greenhouse gases?
“At Taghleef Italy, we approached this issue about ten (10) years ago, thanks to some GHG, LCA and Carbon Footprint Studies. The initial aim was to become familiar with this topic and understand what our environmental impact could be, particularly with our GHG emissions. Three (3) years ago, Taghleef Group decided to strengthen its commitment in preventing Climate change by adding a dedicated professional who can guide the team towards this path and extending this activity to other Taghleef sites.

Meantime, the topic of Sustainability has assumed a key role in the day-to-day and in all aspects of the business which has prompted further goals. In fact, in the last eighteen (18) months, Taghleef Italy has reached important milestones and successfully achieved various certifications including ISCC Plus, ISO 14067, ISO 14064-1 and finally, Ti Italy passed the Critical Review for the study of the LCA of a product according to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Thanks to the CFP SA Certifications and the site’s GHG inventory, registration by product and organization was also carried out with Carbon Footprint Italy.

Today, Taghleef Industries Italy is also the coordinator, in this context, for all the other sites of the Ti Group. It has always been very mindful of these topics since the introduction of ISO 14001 back in the year 2000. All the investments made in the recent decades have been made with the aim to reduce energy consumption.”

What are the concrete actions you have taken to monitor and reduce greenhouse gas emissions?
“To monitor and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we first worked on a technological level, relying on technical solutions and systems that consume less energy. At the same time, we have evaluated [and we are still evaluating] energy suppliers of renewable sources. Last but definitely not the least, our continuous development of products with a lower environmental impact."

What results are you seeing?
“We noticed an increase in the demand for information from our customers regarding the environmental impact of the product they buy. This is a very positive aspect because it highlights a greater awareness and attention to the issue compared to 10-15 years ago. For this reason, we have decided to engage ourselves in obtaining the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) and we plan to accomplish the certification by mid-December of this year for our Italian site. Our goal is to reach these new challenges as soon as possible, both as a supplier and as a partner for our customers. Today, we are better equipped to respond to their requests and to give them prompt feedback on the individual products.”

What challenges do you see for the future?
"The commitment of the whole chain, from supplier to customer, will be fundamental in this journey towards Sustainability along with understanding how to improve and [above all] reduce the environmental impact. This will only be possible if there is a willingness to work together among stakeholders. Green Economy is the present and our future and it is therefore important that everyone moves in the same direction and does research and development work.

Our contribution to support having a more sustainable future is translated in Dynamic Cycle™, the corporate initiative launched in 2020 that is strongly supported by the whole Ti Group to address sustainability issues. Dynamic Cycle™ includes not only the production of innovative films, but also all corporate projects in favor of a Circular Economy with the aim of contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of generations to come”.

How did Bureau Veritas help you? What is the added value brought?
“Bureau Veritas is the Institution that supported the start of our journey into Sustainability that started with the ISCC Plus Certification and carried on with all the other certifications mentioned above. During the verification activities, we met competent people who were able to guide us on this path. The audit for our Italian site proved to be an excellent opportunity for discussion and even more learnings.”
