The Circular Economy:
sustainable solutions for a shared future
“Our planet and our economy cannot survive if we continue
with the ‘take, make, use and throw away’ approach. We
need to retain precious resources and fully exploit all the
economic value within them. The circular economy is about
reducing waste and protecting the environment, but it is
also about a profound transformation of the way our
entire economy works. By rethinking the way we produce,
work, and buy, we can generate new opportunities and
create new jobs.”
Frans Timmermans
First Vice-President, European Commission
Europe has long been a proactive proponent of
environmental protection, implementing strategies to
guide governmental and industrial cooperation and to
create synergies that conserve raw materials, reduce waste,
and increase economic opportunities.
For example, Germany passed their Waste Disposal Act
in 1996, followed by the EU2008-Waste Directive and the
2015 platform introduced in Brussels: Closing the Loop:
An Action Plan for the Circular Economy. Of the platform’s
many key measures, the most important for Taghleef is a
strategy on plastics in the circular economy. It addresses
issues of recyclability, biodegradability, the presence of
hazardous substances in plastics, and the Sustainable
Development Goals target for significantly reducing
marine litter.
Sustainability is not solely a European issue, of course, but
a global one. It’s not specifically about addressing today’s
economic and environmental challenges —it’s about the
generations to come. As a worldwide organization, Taghleef
is positioned to link and align across all regions to steer
the flexible packaging industry towards more sustainable
solutions and offer consumers products with a lower carbon
footprint.
Taghleef is committed to being a leader in the circular
economy within our industry—working together with
government, industry, and customers to make a difference
for our shared planet and our shared future.
